Like Mainstream

Team: Justin Heims, Makhambet Buzurmankulov, Ryan Ostrander, Daniel Mehdi

Description: For this project our goal is to analyze a few key areas of an individual’s facebook profile and determine how “mainstream” they are are. The information we plan on analyzing is the user’s music, movies, television shows, and possibly books. These are all things the user has to “like” for them to appear on his or her profile page so we are assuming that they took care in choosing “likes” that are an accurate representation of their preferences in pop culture and literature. Mainstream can be a hard definition to nail down so for our purposes we’ll say mainstream is based on current popularity. We plan on using institutions like American top 40 chart, Neilsen T.V. rating, and websites like rotten tomatoes and IMDB so determine the popularity of the various “likes”. Aesthetically we were thinking of playing off the word mainstream and using some type of fish as a representation of the facebook user and some type of stream or body of water to represent the various levels of “mainstream” the fish can reside in.
